Are you a small business owner that finally jumped on the Internet and got your business setup with a website after all these years? Really? Good for you, you’ve taken the first step…

…but did you know that world-wide cellphones now OUT NUMBER laptop and desktop computers almost 5-to-1?

This instant access to information, videos, news, getting directions and more on the go has become such an overwhelming area of growth that the CEO of Google, Eric Schmidt, announced at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona that they will consider “mobile first” in all future endeavors. Anything Google creates from here on out will be first placed on the mobile platform and then be worked around for the desktop…!

Just think about that and what it means for the ways you marketing your business over the weeks, months and years ahead.

So you have a regular website and it looks pretty good, right? But now with this increasing trend of more and more consumers and buyers searching the Web on their phones, looking for local events and businesses and more you can’t just assume your website will be able to give you the presence you need to have in these powerful but small handheld cellphones!

If your website has tons of graphics, videos, wide table widths and more, then chances are that a mobile user WILL NOT be able to see your site correctly, and even worse you and your business will miss out on the opportunity to give a browser the information they need most.

What is that?

Well lets think about this… if your out driving and you are looking for a restaurant for dinner to pick something up on the way home for the family… are you going to pull over and try to scroll your little cellphone screen back and forth all over just to find the IMPORTANT things about the restaurant from its regular HTML website? Heck no!

You want to see a mobile webiste screen for the restaurant that is going to quickly load and show you what you need most: 1.) Name & address 2.) Phone number 3.) Simple menu of key items 4.) Directions and Google Maps info.

Thats it!

No need to have all those fancy flash graphics that take forever to load in a regular desktop computer for a mobile customer.

If you need help right away to be one of the first businesses in your area to learn to dominate the Mobile market for your business and industry, contact me right away and we can take 15 minutes to discuss how a mobile website can be a big part of the future of your business marketing arsenal!

Wow! Now HERE is something for Business Owners to be excited (and worried!) about with regards to the impact that Social Media can have on your business…. How about Google using the latest “Tweets” from Twitter.com and other Social Media sites that users have sent about what’s happening right now? How about a customer of yours just leaving your restaurant and had such a great experience and loved the atmosphere that they send a “Tweet” out from their cellphone right then and there and it gets picked up on the front page of Google? Or a worse scenario would be what if they had a horrible experience and post a negative review about your service or business?

This is another reason why it is important to you and your business to be involved Online and part of the Social Media community and to keep your business and brand to the forefront of your clients and customers minds!

What does the term “Web 2.0″ mean exactly?

Well for different people, the term can mean different things but the way I look at Web 2.0 is the marked change in sites online that moved from the standard “static” HTML pages that provided a basic text content environment to a more evolved “interactive” Web that not only allows, but really DEPENDS on the input and growth of content in the form of thoughts, audios and videos from the masses. Meaning to say that Web 2.0 is really an interactive “social” web now that calls for the feedback, comments and contributions to the growth of a website by its users.

Sure its easy to throw out the big names like MySpace.com, Facebook.com, and of course the hottest bandwagon now is Twitter.com… these truly are “Social” community based sites that allow for the two-way interaction between people OR between groups of people OR even between the user and the site content itself. This is easily seen in the interaction available to manipulate and modify data like on the Wikipedia.com site. But Web 2.0 is MORE than just casual social interactions on these types of “Social” sites…

…look at what Amazon has accomplished by taking its purchasing data from customers and introducing a new way to create a “tailor made” shopping cart experience for the customer that provides a win-win-win all around. And on top of the user shopping experience, Amazon was a true forerunner in the way they allowed the customers themselves to rate and comment on their experience of having purchased an item.

This is a great method of interaction that can and should be implemented to be of benefit to the small business or restaurant owner with their own sites–its NOT just for the “big boys” Online that can enjoy building customer loyality and feedback AND even maybe MOST important is the “social proof” of the value and wonderful experience your business has given a customer that can then be shared with other visitors to your site!

So is Web 2.0 the end-all be-all of what the Internet has to offer? No, and in fact, a quote from entrepreneur and author Andrew Keen blasts the Web 2.0 movement.

“As an ideology, it is based upon a series of ethical assumptions about media, culture and technology. It worships the creative amateur: the self-taught filmmaker, the dorm-room musician, the unpublished writer. It suggests that everyone — even the most poorly educated and inarticulate amongst us — can and should use digital media to express and realize themselves. Web 2.0 ‘empowers’ our creativity, it ‘democratizes’ media, it ‘levels the playing field’ between experts and amateurs. The enemy of Web 2.0 is ‘elitist’ traditional media.”

A harsh summary? Perhaps. Just take a random stroll through the back alleyways of YouTube.com and you will be sure to find some of the most off-the-wall, amuzing, disgusting, and down right idiotic levels of behavior to be seen.

But in the end I think you will agree that an “interactive” Web where connections with others can not only be made, but encouraged, can only help INCREASE your ability to build relationships and trust amongst your peers, customers and clients.

The question for you now is what are YOU going to do today to take YOUR business to the next level of Web 2.0?

PS – Take a quick sec to watch this Web 2.0 Video right now! This awesome video was made by a Professor in Kansas. I found it wonderful and profound…
